The Good thing about Being Renewable: ARAUCO’s Vision at COP30

At a moment of global environmental urgency, ARAUCO arrived at COP30 with a clear conviction: sustainability is not only an environmental commitment, but a different way of producing—one grounded in the balance between development, conservation, and regeneration.

Chile: A Forest Voice in the Heart of the Amazon

COP30, held in Belém do Pará in 2025, was a pivotal event for redefining global climate action. In the heart of the Amazon, forest-oriented countries like Chile had the opportunity to show that economic growth and ecosystem protection can go hand in hand.

In this global conversation, ARAUCO brought forward a perspective built on evidence: that of a company that has made nature its engine for development, driving for decades a model where innovation and regeneration advance together. Under its motto “The Power of Being Renewable,” the company highlights that forests are among the most effective solutions for addressing climate challenges. Representing ARAUCO were Soledad Vial, Deputy Manager of Sustainability and Impact; Guillermo Olmedo, Manager of Environmental and Social Value; and Carlos Altimira, along with part of the Arauco Brazil team.

Latin America’s First Nature Positive Company

ARAUCO became the first company in the world to achieve carbon neutrality without relying on external offsets, and the first in Latin America to adopt the Nature Positive standard, which measures its impacts on climate, water, and biodiversity under the British standard BS 8632.

The results are clear: the company shows a positive balance across all these dimensions and is now working to expand these measurements to additional countries and industrial operations. Its goal is to consolidate a comprehensive sustainability management approach, with verifiable long-term results.

Nature as the First Line of Defense

For ARAUCO, nature is not only something to protect—it is the first line of defense against climate change. The company is advancing its “Nature-Based Solutions” program to strengthen territorial resilience, including the management of protected productive landscapes, the development of forest species adapted to heat and water stress—such as the GloNi biotechnology project—and the application of advanced environmental monitoring tools (Lemu).

In addition, ARAUCO has reinforced its wildfire prevention and response systems, reflecting a forward-looking approach to the impacts of climate change.

The Value of Forests in the New Economy

With more than 1.7 million hectares managed responsibly—29% of which are designated for conservation and protection—ARAUCO is close to achieving its goal of ensuring that 30% of its landholdings correspond to native forest, aligned with the global 30×30 Biodiversity Target.

These forests capture more carbon than the company emits, confirming its carbon neutrality since 2019. But their value extends further: every product made from wood or renewable fiber offers a concrete alternative to carbon-intensive materials such as steel, cement, or plastic.

As the company states, “If nature is healthy, our business is too.” For ARAUCO, being renewable is not just a feature of its raw materials—it is a principle that guides how it envisions the future.

Towards Collaborative Climate Action

ARAUCO participated in COP30 by contributing the private sector’s perspective on Nature-Based Solutions, strengthening international alliances, and sharing its experience as a Latin American Nature Positive company.

Because in a world that demands coherence between words and action, the power of being renewable means producing from nature in order to help regenerate the planet.
