ARAUCO Makes Biodiversity Data Publicly Available Through Lemu-Atlas
Corporate- The company will be the first to release data obtained through this platform, enabling communities and various stakeholders to access key information for decision-making in the territories where ARAUCO operates.
Santiago, April 22 – In the context of Earth Day, ARAUCO announced that it will become the first company to make public its biodiversity and environmental data obtained through Lemu-Atlas, an innovative platform that allows users to observe, analyze, and understand ecosystems from an integrated perspective, combining satellite data, artificial intelligence, and science.
This initiative aims to open access to relevant information on biodiversity, vegetation cover, and territorial dynamics, providing communities, researchers, and organizations with a concrete tool to strengthen environmental management and informed decision-making. ARAUCO thus becomes the first company in the country to take this step, setting a precedent for open access to environmental data in the forestry industry.
In this first stage, the platform incorporates the analysis of more than 91,500 hectares of ARAUCO’s landholdings across 20 conservation areas, including high-value ecosystems such as alerce forests, Maulino and Valdivian forests, as well as High Conservation Value Areas such as Caramávida, El Oasis, Huemules de Ñuble, and Reserva San Jorge, among others. This coverage provides a broad and detailed view of the various territories where the company operates, delivering information through 24 indicators organized into 7 categories: water, biodiversity, carbon, climate, vegetation status, risks, and monitoring.
“We believe that moving toward a more open and collaborative approach to land management is essential. Making this information available not only reflects our commitment to transparency, but also to generating shared value with communities and the various stakeholders who live in and care for these ecosystems,” said Guillermo Olmedo, ARAUCO’s Deputy Manager of Environment and Social Value.
Lemu-Atlas integrates different layers of environmental information in one place, facilitating the visualization of key variables such as biodiversity, land-use changes, and ecosystem conditions. Its approach seeks to democratize access to data that has historically been difficult to obtain or interpret, contributing to a deeper understanding of the natural environment. The platform integrates ARAUCO’s data not only in Chile, but also from its operations in Argentina and Brazil.
With this step, ARAUCO reinforces its strategy of incorporating technology and innovation into the management of its operations, advancing toward a more transparent relationship with its environment and promoting the use of tools that help address environmental challenges from a collaborative perspective.
The data is now openly available on Lemu-Atlas for the public, opening new opportunities for research, territorial monitoring, and the development of local initiatives. Through this, ARAUCO sets a new standard for environmental transparency in the country.
